To get off omeprazole for good, you have to deal with the reason you needed it. Omeprazole turns your stomach acid down, but it never touches the cause. For a lot of people that cause is H. pylori, a yeast overgrowth, or too little acid to break food down.
So there are four steps. First, find your cause.
Next, go after it with herbs like mastic gum, which has been used for 2,500 years. Then refill the nutrients the pill has been draining.
Last of all, and only with your doctor's OK, step your dose down as slowly as you can so the acid doesn't come roaring back. Reece Mander, a Clinical Nutritionist, made PyloPurge for step two. One customer, Kirk B., says he hasn't taken omeprazole for over 6 weeks.
This guide is education, not medical advice. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine without your doctor's permission.
Why is it so hard to stop omeprazole?

You stop the pill. Within a week or two the burn is back, and it's worse than it ever was. It feels like proof that you need it for life, but it isn't.
When acid is turned down for months, your stomach pushes back. The moment the pill goes, it makes extra acid.
This has a name: rebound acid hypersecretion, or RAHS. In one study, over 4 in 10 healthy people who took a PPI for 8 weeks got acid symptoms in the 4 weeks after they stopped, against 15% on a dummy pill.
They'd never had reflux before. The pill made the cause invisible and never touched it, so the cause is still there. That's why the steps below deal with the cause first, and only then step down, slowly, with your doctor.
The 4 steps to coming off omeprazole

Step 1: Find out why you needed it
Omeprazole is often handed out without anyone asking why the acid is there. The three causes we see most are H. pylori, yeast and low stomach acid.
Ideally, get an H. pylori test before you try to come off. You need to stop PPIs for 2 weeks before the test, so ask your doctor how to time it. If you can't stop for the test yet, the herbs in PyloPurge can still be taken while you're on the pill.
Not sure which one is yours? Read the 4 signs you have H. pylori, the 4 ways to test for H. pylori and how candida can cause acid reflux.
Step 2: Go after the cause

For H. pylori, PyloPurge puts five herbs in one capsule, as a proprietary blend:
| Ingredient | What it does |
|---|---|
| Clinical-grade mastic gum | Natural resins used for 2,500 years to support the stomach lining and stop H. pylori settling |
| Mango ginger (Curcuma amada) | Raises the protective mucin that coats the stomach |
| Bioavailable curcumin | Calms the stomach lining |
| Broccoli sprout extract (sulforaphane) | Shown in clinical trials to cut bacterial load |
| Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) | Volatile oils with antibacterial action against tough gut bacteria |
Take 3 capsules 5 minutes before breakfast on an empty stomach. If your stomach is sensitive, start with 1 and build up to 3 over about a week.
Most people feel relief in 7–10 days. Stay on it for at least 60 days (2 bottles) so the problem doesn't come back. We don't recommend taking PyloPurge at the same time as triple therapy (the antibiotic course).
If yeast is your cause, YeastPurge does the same job for candida.
Step 3: Refill what the pill has drained

Low acid makes it hard to absorb B12, magnesium and iron. GastroComplete is a multivitamin made for people on PPIs. Take it for 3–6 months while you step down.
Step 4: Step down slowly, with your doctor
Only come off omeprazole with your doctor's permission. Ideally, wait until you've had a negative H. pylori test.
Then step down as slowly as you can. Going slowly gives your stomach time to settle, so you're less likely to get the rebound acid (RAHS) described above.
There's no set timetable that fits everyone. Your doctor will set the pace with you. UK guidance (NICE) already tells doctors to review long-term PPI use every year and to try stepping down to the lowest dose that controls symptoms, so it's a fair thing to ask for.

Once your own acid is back, some people find food sits heavy. That's where DigestPurge comes in: 520mg betaine HCl per 2 capsules, with digestive enzymes, pepsin and gentian root. Take 2 capsules before your biggest meal.
Gaviscon, omeprazole or herbs: what's the difference?

| Gaviscon | Omeprazole | PyloPurge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Forms a raft that floats on top of the stomach contents | Turns acid production down | Goes after the H. pylori behind the acid |
| Aimed at the cause? | No | No | Yes |
| Helps you come off PPIs? | Covers the burn while you do | It's the thing you're coming off | Goes after the reason you needed it |
| How long | Every flare | Often years | 60 days minimum |
Gaviscon and omeprazole turn off the alarm.

As of Oct 2026, PyloPurge is rated 4.4 out of 5 from 1,032 reviews on Loox. Over 10,000 people have bought it, and more than 37,000 bottles have been sold.
Can I take it while I'm still on omeprazole?

It should be fine. We're not aware of any interactions between these herbs and common PPIs, but always check with your doctor first. That matters, because you'll be taking both while you step down.
We don't recommend taking PyloPurge at the same time as triple therapy (the antibiotic course). The herbs have no dangerous side effects, unlike the drugs. If you don't have H. pylori, nothing happens.
The capsules are vegan, the shell is plant cellulose, and they're made for anyone over 18. The full course is at least 60 days, so it's built for weeks of daily use. If your stomach is sensitive, start on 1 capsule and build up.
Who shouldn't take it: If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a medical condition, consult a GP before taking any supplements. Mastic gum comes from the same plant family as pistachios and cashews, so don't take it if you're allergic to them.
If you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, check with your GP first, because curcumin can add to its effect. Stop taking it straight away if you get any side effects.
How is it tested?

PyloPurge is designed in the UK by GoodGut Nutrition, a UK gut-health brand. Every batch is tested twice.
The first test happens at our GMP-certified facility when the batch is made. The second is at an independent lab, which tests for heavy metals and toxins like formaldehyde.
Very few supplement companies do this second step. There's a certificate of analysis for every batch, and you can ask for it at info@goodgutnutrition.co. The broccoli sprout extract comes from France, the mango ginger from India and the nutmeg from Indonesia.
Where can I buy it?
PyloPurge is £36.99 (was £40.99) for 90 capsules, which is 30 days at 3 a day. In the US it's $51.
We ship from the UK and the USA to the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Ghana, the Philippines, South Africa, Nigeria and more. Shipping is free on UK orders over £50 and US orders over $70. Unopened bottles can be returned within 30 days.
Coming off omeprazole: your questions answered
Can I stop omeprazole cold turkey?
Don't stop without your doctor's permission. In one study, over 4 in 10 healthy people got rebound acid symptoms in the weeks after stopping a PPI.
Deal with the cause first. Then, with your doctor, step down as slowly as you can.
How long does it take to get off omeprazole naturally?
There's no set timetable, and your doctor should set the pace. Most people feel relief within 7–10 days on PyloPurge.
Plan on at least 60 days to go after the cause. Ideally, get a negative H. pylori test, then step down as slowly as you can.
Can I take PyloPurge with omeprazole?
It should be fine. We're not aware of any interactions with common PPIs, but always check with your doctor. We don't recommend taking it at the same time as triple therapy.
Do I need an H. pylori test first?
Ideally, yes, and a negative test is the best time to start stepping down. A test means stopping PPIs for 2 weeks, so ask your doctor how to time it.
The herbs in PyloPurge can be taken whether you have H. pylori or not. If you don't, nothing happens.
Who shouldn't take PyloPurge?
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a medical condition, consult a GP before taking any supplements. Don't take it if you're allergic to pistachios or cashews (mastic is from the same plant family).
If you take a blood thinner, check with your GP first. Stop taking it straight away if you get any side effects.
What does long-term omeprazole drain from your body?
Low acid makes B12, magnesium and iron harder to absorb. GastroComplete was made to refill them while you're on a PPI.
What is the best natural alternative to omeprazole?
It depends on why you needed it. For H. pylori, PyloPurge.
For yeast, YeastPurge. For low acid and food that sits heavy, DigestPurge.
